  1. Justify knows he’s the beta horse. Too bad we don’t have these great shots from Secretariat’s mind-blowing run at Bemont. That horse was a machine.

  2. Good Magic, Mendelssohn, Audible, Bolt d’Oro, Magnum Moon, Vino Rosso, Hofburg, Bravazo, Tenfold, My Boy Jack, and several others all tried to beat him and failed. He’s just superior.

  3. For people obsessed with race times trying to downplay Justify’s Triple Crown win in the Belmont versus Secretariat (2:24:00) and American Pharoah (2:26:65) acting like he is somehow weak because of that, compare Justify’s 2:28:18 finish in the Belmont at 11/2 miles (meaning we throw Sir Barton out) versus the other Triple Crown winners:

    Affirmed: 2:26:80
    Seattle Slew: 2:29:60
    Citation: 2:28:20
    Assault: 2:30:80
    Count Fleet: 2:28:20
    Whirlaway: 2:31:00
    War Admiral: 2:28:60
    Omaha: 2:30:60
    Gallant Fox: 2:31:60

Out of this list, only Affirmed outright finished faster than Justify.

In fact, for some modern comparison just look at the winning times going back to 1997 not counting this year and 2015 which have already been noted. * = Winner during a Triple Crown attempt.

    2017 Tapwrit: 2:30:02
    2016 Creator: 2:28:51
    2014 Tonalist*: 2:28:52
    2013 Palace Malice: 2:30:70
    2012 Union Rags: 2:30:42
    2011 Ruler on Ice: 2:30:88
    2010 Drosselmeyer: 2:31:57
    2009 Summer Bird: 2:27:54
    2008 Da’Tara*: 2:29:65
    2007 Rags to Riches: 2:28:74
    2006 Jazil: 2:27:86
    2005 Afleet Alex: 2:28:75
    2004 Birdstone*: 2:27:50
    2003 Empire Maker*: 2:28:26
    2002 Sarava*: 2:29:71
    2001 Point Given: 2:26:56
    2000 Commendable: 2:31:19
    1999 Lemon Drop Kid*: 2:27:88
    1998 Victory Gallop*: 2:29:16
    1997 Touch Gold*: 2:28:82

Well look at that, Justify ran a perfectly good Belmont Stakes time on average in comparison to modern winners also. Aside from the aforementioned American Pharoah only Summer Bird, Jazil, Birdstone, Point Given, and Lemon Drop Kid finished the Belmont faster than Justify. Since 1997, Justify has the 7th fastest finish out of 21 in the Belmont.
